Pregnancy is a difficult journey that brings with it many changes in a woman's body. One of these changes that many pregnant women commonly face is pregnancy discharge, which means vaginal discharge that performs important functions in maintaining vaginal cleanliness and protecting against infection when in its natural form.

When do pregnancy secretions start to come out?

Secretions at the beginning of pregnancy indicate the natural physiological response to hormonal changes in the body, and this helps maintain infection prevention at the beginning of this stage.

Pregnancy discharge may begin The first week of pregnancySome women may notice an increase in secretions even before they miss their period.

Colors of normal pregnancy secretions

Pregnancy secretions are usually thin, clear or white in color and have little or no odor, which is similar to normal daily secretions in women.

The amount of these secretions increases naturally throughout pregnancy, to help protect the vagina from infection by maintaining a balanced pH level.

At the end of pregnancy, the discharge may contain streaks of thick mucus with blood, which may be an early sign of labor.

It is important to monitor any changes in vaginal discharge and contact your doctor if there are signs of infection or abnormal discharge, such as a change in color or odor.

What are the types of pregnancy secretions?

During pregnancy, vaginal secretions increase and their thickness, frequency, or color may vary. Now that we know what normal pregnancy secretions look like, we will mention to you the other types that may be a sign of an infection or medical condition as follows:

1. Thick or lumpy white discharge: This may be a sign of a yeast infection, also known as a fungal infection.

2. Green or yellow secretions:

Such discharge during pregnancy may indicate an infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

It is also necessary to pay attention to the mixing of some drops of urine with the secretions due to the pressure of the fetus on the area and the occurrence of urine leakage in the pregnant woman, and to carefully monitor the color of the secretions to avoid misdiagnosis or overtreatment.

3. Gray secretions:

It may be a sign of bacterial vaginosis, an infection caused by an imbalance in the balance of bacteria in the vagina.

4. Brown secretions:

The reason for this color of secretions during pregnancy is attributed to various factors.

In some cases, it may also be a sign of old blood from the cervix or vagina, cervical irritation caused by sexual activity, a pelvic exam, or infection.

If the discharge is accompanied by pain or cramps, it is advisable to seek immediate medical care.

5. Pink or red secretions:

These secretions during pregnancy may indicate bleeding, which is a cause for concern.

It is important to inform your doctor of any abnormal secretions, to treat the condition and prevent possible complications that may affect your health or the health of your fetus.

The difference between secretions at birth and secretions after birth

It is normal for there to be more vaginal discharge during pregnancy, to help prevent the transmission of bacteria, or any other sources of infection from the vagina to the uterus.

The difference between secretions at birth and secretions after birth is as follows:

After about a week it turns pink.

After about 10 to 14 days, the color of the postpartum changes to a creamy yellowish white.

However, it should be noted that blood secretions are a natural sign that your body is preparing for childbirth, but if you suffer from heavy bleeding at the end of pregnancy, you must contact the doctor immediately.

Causes of blood-tinged discharge during pregnancy

Blood-mixed secretions can occur during pregnancy for several reasons, the most prominent of which include the following:

1.  Fixation bleeding:

This occurs when the fertilized egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus, causing minor bleeding, and appears around the fourth week of pregnancy.

2. Cervical changes:

The increased blood flow to the uterus during pregnancy can cause minor bleeding.

3. Infection:

Infections, such as yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis, may cause discharge mixed with blood.

4. Uterine tumors:

Small lumps growing on the cervix may cause bleeding.

If you are exposed to secretions mixed with blood during pregnancy, you should consult a doctor immediately, especially if the bleeding is heavy, clotted, or accompanied by abdominal pain.

Bleeding in the advanced stages of pregnancy may be a sign of serious problems that require medical intervention to protect the mother and fetus, and prevent the risk of premature birth.

Important tips about pregnancy secretions

Increased secretions during pregnancy can be dealt with by following some simple steps:

Keep the vaginal area clean using gentle soap and warm water.

Wearing cotton underwear allows proper airflow and helps absorb excess moisture.

Use sanitary pads in case of heavy secretions, to absorb excess moisture.

Drinking enough water can also help maintain vaginal health and reduce the possibility of developing an infection.

Pay attention to eating a healthy diet and avoid eating a lot of sugars that may support the growth of fungal infections.

Introduce foods and nutritional supplements that contain probiotics into the diet after consulting a doctor and ensuring that they are safe during pregnancy, because they may prevent bacterial imbalances in the vagina.
