How is allergy testing done and what is the difference from antibiotic allergy testing?
Medical articles

Allergies cause many annoying symptoms that may be serious and life-threatening if severe. Here lies the importance of conducting an allergy test, which helps to uncover its causes so that the person avoids exposure to it and reduces the risk of developing an allergy.

How is an allergy test performed?

Allergy is an exaggerated reaction of the immune system to a substance that does not usually cause harm, unlike other microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, but the immune system treats it as a foreign body that must be dealt with, causing many symptoms to appear, such as: coughing, sneezing, and runny nose, without actually exposing the person to a real infection.

Allergy testing helps detect Allergens In a person, it is called a skin allergy test

Or a skin prick test. We enumerate the steps for conducting it as follows:

  • The doctor places small dots of suspected allergy irritants on various areas of the skin.
  • The doctor lightly scratches the skin at the location of each point.
  • The person waits for a quarter to a third of an hour for the doctor to evaluate the results.
  • The skin turns red with a bump appearing at the sites that caused the allergy.

The doctor may suspect an allergy to some substances despite the negative result, and therefore he may order a subcutaneous allergy test, where he uses a thin needle to inject a small amount of the substance suspected of causing the allergy under the skin and waits some time until the symptoms of the reaction appear, such as redness of the skin or the appearance of a rash.

We add to your information that the doctor may ask you to refrain from taking some types of medications for a certain period before performing the allergy test to avoid their impact on the test result, including antihistamines and antidepressants.

After the results appear, the doctor will ask you to stay away as much as possible from all substances that caused skin irritation, whether pollen, dust, some types of foods, etc. He will also share some tips for prevention and may prescribe some anti-allergy medications to relieve symptoms if they appear.

How is an antibiotic allergy test performed?

Antibiotic allergy testing differs from allergy tests that are performed to discover the causes that lead to the appearance of allergy symptoms, and because some people may be confused about the difference between the two tests, we will explain some information to you.

Antibiotic sensitivity testing is done to find the best type of antibiotic to treat the infection that the person suffers from, especially when the infection is repeated, as some types of microbes are resistant to a number of antibiotics, which makes them useless in treating.

The doctor performs this test by taking a sample from the affected part of the body. The sample may be one of the following:

  • Blood sample.
  • Urine sample.
  • Sputum sample.

The doctor then cultures the sample to allow the bacteria to multiply and discover their response to different types of antibiotics. Their response can appear as follows:

  • Responsive to antibiotics: Which means that bacteria cannot grow in the presence of a specific type of antibiotic.
  • Antibiotic resistant: Which means that bacteria can grow in the presence of the antibiotic because they do not respond to it.
  • Moderately responsive: Which means that the bacteria need a larger dose of antibiotic to prevent their growth.

Is the allergy test painful?

No, the allergy test is not painful, as it is only performed on the surface of the skin, but the doctor may apply a topical anesthetic cream to the children during the test to avoid any discomfort.
