Influenza epidemics worldwide kill up to 650,000 people and infect up to 20% of the population worldwide. Seasonal influenza symptoms vary in severity between individuals during the colder months.

Seasonal influenza symptoms

Before we highlight the common symptoms of this infection, let us know the definition of influenza.

Seasonal influenza

It is an infectious disease caused by different strains of influenza viruses, including influenza A and influenza B.

It spreads easily, especially in crowded places, such as schools, workplaces, and public transportation.

Seasonal influenza symptoms appear in the cold months and are:

Seasonal flu symptoms usually appear within one to four days after exposure to the virus.

Severe flu symptoms

In some cases, the flu leads to more severe symptoms and complications. Symptoms include:

  • Difficulty or shortness of breath.
  • Chest pain or pressure.
  • Severe headache.
  • Severe muscle pain.
  • Confusion or change in mental status.
  • Severe weakness or imbalance.
  • Constant vomiting.
  • High fever lasting more than three days.
  • Worsening of chronic medical conditions.

It is important to note that not everyone with the flu will experience severe symptoms. Most people who get it recover within a few days (less than two weeks), but some people may develop serious complications.

When is seasonal influenza?

Most cases occur during the fall and winter months in the Northern Hemisphere and during the spring and summer months in the Southern Hemisphere.

For example, seasonal influenza in Saudi Arabia usually occurs during the fall and early spring months.

However, the exact timing and duration of flu season can vary from year to year.

What are the causes of seasonal influenza?

Seasonal influenza is caused by influenza viruses that spread globally, which spread from person to person through respiratory secretions resulting from coughing, sneezing, or respiratory droplets while interacting with an infected person.

In addition, touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the face can lead to transmission.

How many days does seasonal influenza last?

Seasonal flu symptoms usually last for about a week for most people, and symptoms go away without needing medical care.

While most people recover within a week, flu-related coughs can be severe and last for two weeks or longer.

However, the severity and duration of symptoms depend on various factors, including the patient's general health and the immune system's response.

Treatment of seasonal influenza

Treatment for seasonal influenza aims to relieve symptoms and prevent complications, and most people recover from the flu on their own within a week.

Over-the-counter treatments, such as pain relievers, decongestants and cough suppressants, provide clear and effective symptom relief.

Antiviral medications help reduce the severity and duration of seasonal flu symptoms, especially in people at risk of serious illness, such as older adults, pregnant women, and children.

These medications work by inhibiting the reproduction of the influenza virus in the body, and are most effective when taken in the first hours after the onset of symptoms.

Antiviral medications can shorten the duration of the illness by a day or so and help prevent serious complications.

Treating seasonal influenza at home

In addition to these treatment methods, many non-drug methods help relieve flu symptoms and promote recovery.

  • Rest and get enough sleep.
  • Drink fluids, such as water and herbs.
  • Rinsing with salt water to relieve sore throat.
  • Eat food rich in nutrients to support the immune system.
  • Use an air humidifier to relieve congestion.
  • Practice good hygiene and sterilization;

While most seasonal flu cases can be managed at home, it is important to seek medical help if severe symptoms develop or if symptoms persist or worsen.

How long does it take to recover from seasonal influenza?

Recovery time from seasonal flu varies, with most people starting to feel better within a few days to a week, while for some it may take longer to fully recover.

It is important to rest, drink sufficient fluids, and follow the recommended treatment options.

Diagnosis of seasonal influenza

To diagnose seasonal influenza, the doctor evaluates the patient's symptoms and medical history, and checks for signs of influenza, such as high fever or respiratory distress, during the physical examination.

In some cases, tests, such as a rapid influenza screening test or culture of a pharyngeal or nasal swab, may be done to confirm the presence of the influenza virus.

How do I protect myself from seasonal influenza?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual influenza vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older to help prevent the spread of influenza viruses.

Flu needle stimulates The immune system produces antibodies that protect against influenza viruses, which are expected to be the most common this season.

Practicing good hygiene can also help prevent the spread of seasonal influenza, and includes:

  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use hand sanitizer when there is no soap and water.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching the face, especially the eyes, nose and mouth.

By following these guidelines, individuals can maintain their health and effectively prevent seasonal influenza.

Complications and post-influenza effects

Although many people experience the flu with minor, non-troubling symptoms, some are at risk of the following complications:

  • Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a common complication of seasonal influenza, especially in individuals who suffer from a weak immune system or chronic diseases.
  • Sinus and ear infections: Seasonal flu can also lead to secondary infections, which may cause symptoms, such as facial pain, nasal congestion, and ear pain.

Individuals with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease, may experience worsening of their conditions during seasonal flu.

What is the difference between Corona and influenza?

Coronavirus (COVID-19) and influenza are contagious respiratory viral infections, but there are some key differences between them:

  • Cause: COVID-19 is caused by the coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2, while influenza is caused by different strains of influenza viruses each year.
  • Symptoms: Both COVID-19 and influenza present with similar symptoms, such as fever, cough, sore throat, and fatigue. However, loss of sense of taste and smell is specific to COVID-19 and does not usually appear in influenza cases.

COVID-19 symptoms also tend to last longer than flu symptoms, and shortness of breath is likely to become more severe and long-lasting.

  • Complications: Both diseases may lead to pneumonia, but Covid-19 has been associated with a wide range of complications affecting different organs, including the heart, kidneys, brain and lungs.
  • Treatment: Antiviral medications are used for both diseases, but they are specific to each virus.

While coronavirus and influenza share symptoms and methods of transmission, they are caused by different viruses and have distinct characteristics in terms of duration of symptoms, complications, and treatment methods.

It is important to follow public health guidelines, such as wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and getting vaccinated, to prevent the spread of these two respiratory diseases at the same time.

Seasonal influenza is a common respiratory illness that affects millions of individuals around the world.
