Shingles is a common viral disease that arouses medical attention due to its severe symptoms. A painful skin rash is the first and most well-known symptom of shingles. However, it varies in terms of severity, duration, and the areas it affects.

Symptoms of shingles

Shingles, also known as shingles, is a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, making them a little similar in terms of symptoms.

Symptoms of shingles usually appear as a painful rash with blisters spread on one side of the body. Other symptoms include:

  • fever.
  • صداع.
  • goosebumps.
  • Gastrointestinal disorder.
  • آلام العضلات.
  • القيء.

These symptoms can accompany a painful rash and disappear once these blisters heal.

The first symptoms of shingles

The first symptoms of shingles vary from person to person, but they often include a burning, tingling, or itching sensation in a specific area of the body.

The rash often appears on one side of the body and along a specific skin area, which is an area that receives nerve supplies from a single nerve. Among the areas of the body most affected by shingles are the abdomen, back, and shoulder.

Symptoms of shingles in the abdomen

When shingles affects the abdomen, the rash usually appears as a pattern similar to a belt that wraps around one side of the body.

The rash consists of painful red blisters that quickly develop into fluid-filled blisters. These blisters are often painful and cause discomfort and irritation.

Several days after the injury, the blisters will burst and create an irritated, scaly surface that will heal in about two weeks.

Symptoms of shingles in the back

Shingles can also affect the back, causing a similar pattern of rash as on the abdomen, but may be more bothersome in that the patient may not be able to lie comfortably or sleep, due to the painful rash.

It is important to note that the pain associated with shingles ranges from mild to severe, and the affected area of skin is very sensitive to the touch.

Symptoms of shingles in the shoulder

When shingles affects the shoulder, the rash may extend from the back or chest area to the shoulder and upper arm.

The rash follows the same condition as in other areas, starting with red blisters that develop into blisters until crusts form.

Prevention of shingles

To avoid spreading shingles, it is important that infected individuals take precautions, which include keeping the rash clean and covered, avoiding contact with individuals who have not previously had chickenpox or who have not received the vaccine, and practicing personal hygiene such as frequent hand washing.

Shingles vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that the genetically engineered recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV), known as Shingrix, be given to adults age 50 or older even if they have had shingles before;

It is also recommended for use in adults ages 19 and older with weakened immune systems.

In addition, early treatment with antiviral medications can help prevent complications and speed up the recovery process.

Is shingles contagious?

Shingles itself is not contagious, but infected individuals can transmit the varicella zoster virus (related to chickenpox) to those who are not previously infected or who have not received the vaccine.

Transmission usually occurs through direct contact with the open blisters of a person with shingles, so people are considered contagious until all the blisters crust over and dry.

Individuals who contract the virus from shingles have chickenpox, not shingles.

It is recommended to avoid contact with susceptible individuals, especially pregnant women, people with a weakened immune system, and infants under one month of age.

The fastest way to treat shingles

When it comes to treating shingles quickly, early intervention is key and crucial;

Antiviral medications, such as acyclovir, help reduce the severity and extent of symptoms, and starting treatment within 72 hours of the rash appears to allow the body's immune system to effectively fight the infection and inhibit the growth of the virus.

In addition to antiviral medications, other treatments for shingles may include the use of over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), to relieve pain and reduce the inflammatory condition.

Cold compresses and topical creams containing capsaicin can also be used.

متى يجب زيارة الطبيب؟

There are cases that require an immediate visit and consultation with a doctor when suffering from shingles, and these cases include the following:

  • If the rash and shingles pain are close to the eye area, to avoid permanent eye damage.
  • If the affected person is 70 years old and over, he should visit a doctor, as the chances of developing serious complications are high.
  • If the infected person has a weak immune system, or if a member of his family has a weak immune system.
  • If the shingles rash continues to spread throughout the body, with pain.

How long does shingles heal?

Shingles usually heals within 3 to 5 weeks, although some symptoms, such as pain, may persist after the rash disappears.

However, it is important to note that the nerve pain caused by shingles, noted earlier, can persist even after the rash has healed, and for this reason, early intervention and proper management of shingles symptoms are crucial to reducing complications and promoting faster recovery.

Although most cases of shingles resolve on their own within a few weeks, some symptoms may indicate the need for medical care, so understanding the symptoms of shingles is crucial for early detection and effective management of this viral infection.

Remember, if you suspect you have shingles, consult your physician for an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan.
