Frequently asked questions

What things cause allergies?

Allergies are caused by a variety of substances known as triggers or allergens, including pollen, house dust, animal dander, insect stings, and after eating certain foods such as nuts, milk, eggs, and seafood, in addition to some medications such as penicillin and chemicals in perfumes or cosmetics. Various environmental factors such as smoke or pollution can exacerbate symptoms in people with allergies, and the response varies from person to person as the immune system overreacts to these resources, and thus symptoms that range from mild such as sneezing and itching arise.

How do I know what type of allergy I have?

To find out what type of allergy you are suffering from, it is best to consult a doctor who specializes in allergy and immunology, as he will take a complete medical history and identify the symptoms and signs that appear on you and their timing. Then the doctor will conduct diagnostic tests such as a skin prick test that detects the body’s reaction to a group of allergens, or a blood test will be done to measure the percentage of IgE antibodies specific to the allergy. These procedures can help in accurately identifying the substances that trigger the allergy, which enables you to avoid them and develop the appropriate treatment plan to relieve or control the symptoms.

What tests are necessary for allergies?

The tests required to diagnose allergies include a skin test, which is one of the most common and accurate tests, where the skin is exposed to small amounts of substances suspected of causing the allergy and the skin’s reaction to them is monitored. In addition, a blood test can be performed to measure the level of antibodies specific to specific allergens. This is a useful analysis in cases where a skin test cannot be performed, such as having skin diseases or taking medications that affect the results. In some cases, the doctor requests a stimulation test under direct medical supervision, or he may request a skin patch test to diagnose a contact allergy, and the doctor chooses the test.
